dated November 1, 1956: Anglo-French action

British and French forces launched a combined operation in the Suez Canal zone at dawn on October 31, a French newspaper has reported. A complete news blackout has been clamped down over all information from Egypt. The Franco-British General Staff, directing the operations after the expiry of the ultimatum announced on October 30 by France and Britain, expected the main military effort to take place later on October 31. The newspaper added that the operation began at 4-30 a.m. GMT with bombing carried out by an air fleet.
