dated November 1, 1956: US resolution vetoed

Britain and France on October 31 vetoed a US resolution in the UN Security Council calling on all nations to refrain from the use of force or threat of force in Egypt. Britain has never before used the veto power in the Security Council. The Council voted seven in favour, two against (Britain and France) and two abstentions (Belgium and Australia). The Council President announced that because Britain and France, two of the five permanent members of the Council, had voted against the resolution, it was lost.
