This Day That Age
The Gandhi Smarak Mandir at Cape Comorin was declared open on October 30 by the Adviser to the T.-C. Government, Mr. P.S. Rau, in the absence of the President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The Mandir was constructed by the T.-C. Government at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs. It may be recalled that it was here that a portion of the mortal remains of Gandhiji were consigned to the holy seas on February 12, 1948. An interesting feature of the Mandir is that its longitudinal axis is so fixed that a "solar salute" installed therein becomes possible every year on October 2 - Gandhiji's birthday. On that day, the sun's rays will fall on a pedestal through two slits provided on the curved roof of the meditation hall and on the flat canopy over it, and the light would be diffused by a special optical device. Provision has also been made for slight variations in the declination of the sun, year by year, through adjustment in the slits.
