Staff Reporter
Dharmapuri: Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal has asked village education committee presidents and field functionaries of the education department to enrol out-of-school children and potential child labourers in appropriate schools in the district. At a review meeting at the Papparapatti Government Higher Secondary School here on Tuesday, he said according to a survey conducted by SSA more than 5,300 out-of-school children and child labourers were identified in Dharmapuri district. Of them, a total of 624 child labourers were yet to be enrolled. In addition, about 784 children had migrated to neighbouring districts and States. The Collector instructed headmasters of Government schools to prepare a list of out-of-school children in their respective areas and enrol them in appropriate alternative schools at the earliest.
`Persuade parents'
Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (SSA) had mainstreamed as many as 788 children into regular schools till date. About 288 children were enrolled in Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) centres, 688 in bridge courses and 323 children in residential schools. VECs should persuade parents of dropouts and child labourers to enrol their children in appropriate schools. EGS centres would be opened in habitations, which did not have a school within one km radius, Mr. Bansal added. Assistant District Project Coordinator, Somasundar and District Elementary Education Officer, Baskaran were present.
