Italy suffers shock defeat

NAGOYA (Japan): Defending champion Italy was upset by Serbia and Montenegro on the opening day of the women's World volleyball championships.

Serbia-Montenegro, making its first appearance in the tournament in 28 years, posted a 25-18, 25-22, 19-25, 27-25 win on Tuesday over Italy.

The results:

First stage: Pool `A': South Korea bt Costa Rica 25-16, 25-15, 25-17; Poland bt Kenya 25-15, 25-17, 20-25, 25-20; Taiwan bt Japan 18-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23.

Pool `B': Germany bt Dominican Republic 25-17, 25-16, 25-21; Russia bt Mexico 25-8, 25-11, 25-10; China bt Azerbaijan 25-23, 24-26, 25-16, 25-22.
