PUDUCHERRY: Almost a week after a complaint was launched against Social Welfare Minister P. Angalane by his second wife Kavipriya, police have registered a case under section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, which defines the offence of matrimonial cruelty. Ms. Kavipriya, whom he married after divorcing his first wife, had launched the complaint with the Thirukannor police on October 25 alleging torture and harassment, as she was an impediment for the Minister's third marriage. "We have registered the case on October 31 under section 498A of the IPC and the case is being handed over to the Women police station," Inspector General of Police Kishan Kumar told reporters. Asked about the delay in registering the case he said, "It was a case of matrimonial discord and could not be treated like any other case. Like in other such cases, we tried for reconciliation, but it did not work out," he added. When asked about why the case was not registered under the new law on domestic violence against women, he said, "It was not registered under the new law because of procedural detail. " After the news spread about the registration of the case against Mr. Angalane, who has been elected for the second time from the reserved Thirubuvanai constituency, rumours that the Minister had submitted the resignation surfaced. However, when contacted, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy denied that the Minister had resigned.
