Arms haul at Jorabat, ULFA man held

Special Correspondent

Guwahati: The Assam police have recovered a cache of arms, suspected to have come from Bangladesh, and arrested an ULFA activist and two others. The police said eight packets of plastic explosives, 15 Austrian grenades, nine M-20 pistols, 18 magazines and 450 rounds of ammunition for 7.62 rifles were received by Prabal Chetia of the United Liberation Front of Asom and being taken to Tinsukia district on Monday night. The consignment was intercepted at Jorabat near the Assam-Meghalaya border during a vehicle check, Guwahati Senior Superintendent of Police Nitul Gogoi told reporters here on Tuesday. Chetia and driver Birendra Mahato told the police that consignment was only coconut. However, a check of their Bolero vehicle showed up the cache. The police also arrested Basanta Deka of Japorigog, who had allegedly given shelter to the duo. It was suspected that the arms might have come from Bangladesh through Cherrapunjee.
