No let-up in rain, several towns under water in A.P.

Crops in more than two lakh acres inundated

HYDERABAD: Large areas in the towns of Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Vijayawada, Ongole, Chirala, Repalli, Narsapur and Eluru lay under waist-deep water as heavy rain lashed Coastal Andhra for the fourth day on Tuesday despite the depression weakening into a trough.

Besides, crops in over an estimated two lakh acres were inundated in Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and West Godavari districts which again bore the brunt of the rain on Tuesday. Machilipatnam remained cut off from Vijayawada and other parts of Krishna.

Incessant rain threw normal life out of gear in several coastal towns and villages, which were cut off. Power and drinking water supply was disrupted at several places. With the "trough" still hovering over the State, "heavy to very heavy" rain is likely to lash Coastal Andhra and also Khammam and Nalgonda in Telangana on Wednesday, a forecast says. Chief secretary J. Harinarayan reviewed the situation at a high level meeting, asking the Collectors to undertake enumeration of losses immediately to enable disbursement of relief. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy will undertake an aerial survey of Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts on Wednesday to assess the flood damage.

Revenue officials made frantic efforts to ferry people to safer places by boats in Machilipatnam, Gudiwada, Repalli and Narsapur. Counselling for nursing students and election of the Mayor of Vijayawada Corporation, both to be held at Vijayawada, and interviews at Eluru for Anganwadi workers were put off.
