Ask Government to buy power from neighbouring States

HYDERABAD: The State BJP has demanded an all-party meeting to discuss the power situation and `unrest' among sugarcane farmers seeking remunerative prices.

At a press conference on Tuesday, senior party leaders Bandaru Dattatreya and Ch. Vidyasagar Rao criticised Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for stating that power would not be supplied for more than seven hours during the rabi season.

They urged the Government to purchase power from neighbouring States to meet the demands of the agricultural sector.

Hydel power was not being produced although the reservoirs were full, they alleged.

The BJP leaders hit out at the Government for not announcing the minimum support price for sugarcane, leading to unrest among farmers.

They demanded MSP of Rs. 1,500 a tonne and permission for ryots to sell cane in Maharashtra.
