State's social audit comes in for praise

  • Workshop being held on strides made by State
  • All-out efforts being made to bring down migration

HYDERABAD: Rural Development Minister D. Srinivas has asked officials to ensure that there is no scope for corruption in the execution of works under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).

Stating that the social audit launched in February was yielding good results and exposed black sheep in the system, he said on Tuesday that the programme would be made more effective so that labourers got employment on demand.

The Minister told reporters that impressed by the work done by the State on the social audit front, senior officials from Maharasthra, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa were here to attend a four-day national workshop on the strides made by Andhra Pradesh.

All-out efforts were being made to bring down migration in districts where the programme was being implemented. In case of Anantapur, the Government was exploring all possibilities to bring down migration. The Collector was directed to take steps to ensure that all those who sought it were provided work. Magsaysay awardee Aruna Roy said the social audit was noteworthy.

She complimented the Government for taking the bold step of launching it when other States were reluctant to do so.

Principal Secretary (Rural Development) K. Raju said more than 1,200 habitations had been covered under the social audit. The remaining villages would be covered in five to six months. A team of senior officials was leaving for Anantapur on November 5 to study the reasons for migration of labourers and other issues related to NREGP.
