Convention centre to be set up in Thrissur city

Staff Reporter

A `decorated' town also planned

  • Markets to be set up for vegetables and non-vegetarian items
  • Biogas plants to come up in different parts of the city

THRISSUR: The Thrissur Corporation will set up a convention centre with a capacity to accommodate 2,000 persons at Sakthan Thampuran Nagar.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mayor R. Bindu said the foundation stone for the proposed centre would be laid as part of the 50-day-long golden jubilee celebrations of Kerala Formation. She said the Corporation would set up a decorated `Town Square' at Sakthan Thampuran Nagar. A statue of Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of the erstwhile princely State of Kochi who contributed immensely for the development of Thrissur, would be erected at the `Town Square'.

The Mayor said separate markets for vegetables and non-vegetarian items were also being planned as part of the golden jubilee celebrations. Biogas plants would be set up on a wide-scale in different parts of the city, including at Laloor where the urban waste is being dumped now.

Tenders were invited for the Rs.1.4-crore project to replace the 5-km damaged stretch of water pipeline from the Peechi reservoir. The proposal for replacing the entire stretch of pipeline from Peechi to the city was under consideration of the Corporation. Studies were also being undertaken to explore the possibility of bringing water from the Karuvannur river, Ms. Bindu said.

Marriage halls would be set up at Koorkkenchery and Peringavu.

The Corporation shopping complex at Mannuthy would be inaugurated by Speaker K. Radhakrishnan on Thursday. The children's library at Nehru Park would be modernised as part of the jubilee celebrations, the Mayor added.
