PUDUKOTTAI: A 42-year-old man, R. Soundararajan of Kaattu Naval near Gandarvakottai, has been detained under the Goondas Act on Monday. He was involved in several cases registered in the past few years,. Based on recommendations from the Superintendent of Police, Kapil Saratkar, Collector S. J. Chiru issued the order.

Children's film fete

NAGAPATTINAM: A fortnight-long children's film festival was inaugurated by Colector Tenkasi S. Jawahar here on Tuesday. Five films would be screened at 14 theatres in Nagapattinam, Mayiladuturai, Vedaranyam and Sirkazhi municipal areas. Mettur level

Telecom adalat planned in Erode

ERODE: To redress grievances, if any, of landline and CellOne customers in Erode telecom district, BSNL is holding a telecom adalat.

A release issued in this connection says those customers with unsolved complaints for over three months, can write mentioning the nature of complain, the officer concerned's response and other details to Mr. A.

Vajravel, Assistant General Manager (Public Relations), BSNL, Gandhiji Road, Erode 638 001. The letter should reach the officer before November 10 and the cover should have the `Telecom Adalat' written on it, the release adds.

Indira Gandhi remembered

ERODE: Twenty-third death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was observed on Tuesday in Erode.

Erode South District Congress Committee president R. M. Palanichamy, MLA, administered the anti-terrorism pledge.

Congress workers and leaders of various wings in the party garlanded Indira Gandhi's picture, a release here has said.

Killed in accident

NAMAKKAL: A man was killed when the lorry he was driving hit a roadside tree in Elachipalayam, near here, on Monday.

The police have identified the deceased as Palanisamy (30) of Kadambur, near Sathyamangalam.

The accident occurred when he lost control of the vehicle, the police said.

Financial aid to DMK worker

CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi gave Rs. 1 lakh to Thulasingam, a local functionary, on behalf of the party.

MDMK for legal action

TIRUPUR: Senior leader of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam S. Duraisamy said the party would approach the court if its candidate for Velampalayam Municipal Chairman post was not declared elected in ten days.

He told reporters here that R. Nagaraj had won the elections with 11 votes out of 21 in the indirect elections to the post. This was announced by the returning officer and he also recorded the results in the minute book. But, a DMK functionary tore the ballot papers and a page of minute book, he said. The State Election Commission has withheld the results and ordered re-poll. Mr. Duraisamy said they would write to the Chief Minister demanding its candidate be declared elected. If the Government failed to act, the party would approach the court. — Staff Reporter

Landslip hits NMR service

Coimbatore: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway train service between Mettuppalayam and Udhagamandalam was disrupted on Tuesday morning after huge boulders rolled onto the track following a landslip on Monday night.

The service stood affected for five days due to frequent landslips because of heavy rains. Only on October 26 the railway officials managed to restore the track for the service.

Sri Lankan refugee held

RAMANATHAPURAM: The police have taken custody of a Sri Lankan refugee, who is suspected to be a member of a terrorist group in Sri Lanka. Sources said he was one among the 17 refugees who reached Dhanushkodi on Monday. — Staff Reporter

Tourist train

Chennai: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation is operating Bharat darshan, an exclusive pilgrim and holiday tourist train, to Tirupathi-Kalahasthi-Bangalore-Mysore- Goa-Moogambiga-Dharmasala-Udipi-Sringeri-Dharmasala-Subramanya-Guruvayur.

The train will leave Madurai on November 11 via Dindigul, Karur, Erode, Salem, Arakkonam, where the tourists can board the train.

The cost of the package is Rs 5,745 inclusive of all taxes. Special arrangements have been made for trouble-free "dharshan" at Tirumalai, according to corporation officials.

Woman murdered

Tuticorin : A 33-year-old woman was allegedly murdered at Kovilpatti near here on Tuesday. Her husband was arrested.

The police said Abraham suspected the fidelity of his wife, Grace Mary (33) and killed her with a pair of scissors at their house at Sankaralingapuram while she was fast asleep.

Struck dead by lightning

RAMANATHAPURAM : A 62-year-old man was struck dead by lightning on Tuesday. Sources said the mishap occurred when Karupaiah of Kadangan was working in a field. The Thiruvadanai police have registered a case.

Cheating case

DINDIGUL : Seven persons — five in Dindigul and one each in N. Panjampatti and Pattiveeranpatti — had filed a petition individually with the Superintendent of Police, A. Pari, seeking action against a person who cheated them.

They charged that Radhika of Chennai had collected money to the tune of Rs.2 lakh from them promising jobs according to their qualification and experience in Singapore. — Staff Reporter
