BANGALORE: Rail Wheel Factory kept its hopes of making the round robin second phase of the A division hockey tournament alive with a 2-1 victory over Sports Authority of India `B' here on Tuesday. Jithin Kalappa (12th) and Ravi Kumar (49th) scored for RWF, while George Dominic (50th) scored off a penalty corner for SAI `B'. Meanwhile, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited beat Bombers 3-0 to progress to the second phase. Rajesh (3rd) off a penalty corner, Tega Babu (10th) and Ilavarasan (24th) scored for HAL. In the third match of the day, Madras Engineering Group `B' thumped Postal 7-0 with Samson Fernandes scoring four (1st, 8th, 12th and 21st) goals including a hat-trick. A.M. Bopanna (36th and 52nd) scored a brace and K.T. Bopanna (5th) also scored for MEG. The Madras Sappers' `B' team also made the round robin second phase to be played from November 3 to 5.
Navneeth triumphs
The 14-year old A.R. Navneeth is undoubtedly the best junior player on view in the Karnataka table tennis scene and he proved that once again, winning his seventh straight junior boys title of the season in the M.S. Ramaiah memorial State-ranking table tennis championship, which concluded at Canara Union in Bamgalore on Tuesday. Mixing caution with aggression, Navneeth, who won the gold in the under-17 category of the National School Games in Bilaspur a fortnight ago, downed Akhil V. Athresh 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7. The men's and women's singles finals ran on the expected lines with both the favourites, Uday S. Atthreya and B.M. Ashwini of Union Bank, emerging champions. Top seed Uday defeated second seed Anirban Tarafadar 11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 11-5, 11-2. The second seed, B.M. Ashwini got the better of promising junior, Shamika V. Desai of Belgaum 11-9, 12-10, 11-5, 12-10. S.R. Nikitha won the junior girls singles title with a 15-13, 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 win over N. Poojtha. C.V.L. Sastry, president of the KTTA presented bouquets to all the winners who would later receive gold coins on December 25. The results: Men's singles final: Uday S. BNMIT advances
BNMIT (Bangalore) registered a 2-1 win over SMVIT (Bangalore) to enter the second round in the VTU inter-collegiate tennis tournament (M&W), conducted by the SJC in Mysore on Tuesday.

Mysore Zone wins
Mysore Zone defeated Bangalore Zone by nine wickets in a KSCA inter-zonal under-17 tournament tie that concluded in Bangalore on Tuesday. Chasing 98, Mysore scored 101 for one in its second innings to clinch the match. Earlier Salauddin's six-wicket haul helped Mysore bundle out Bangalore for 97 in its second innings.
