A day to remember two leaders

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The 130th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was instrumental in integrating India in the post-Independence era by forcing the princely States to merge with the Indian Union, was observed on Tuesday in Gulbarga city.

Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik, accompanied by BJP MLC Shashil G. Namoshi, former president of the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Amarnath Patil, and secretary of the Hyderabad Karnataka Vimochana Dinacharana Samiti Laxman Dasti, garlanded the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Prayer meeting

District Congress Committee president Allamprabhu Patil and other Congress leaders garlanded the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and participated in a prayer meeting organised at the DCC office to observe the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Mr. Patil, in his address, highlighted the important role played by these two leaders in protecting the integrity of the country.

Mr. Patil recalled the efforts of Vallabhbhai Patel to end the rule of the Nizam and liberate the Hyderabad province and merge it with the Indian Union.

Indira Gandhi's role

Mr. Patil pointed out that Indira Gandhi played a crucial role in keeping alive the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) and also in making India a leader of the Third World during the Cold War period.
