ORDEAL BY WATER: A resident emptying his house of floodwater at Pushpaleelanagar in Eluru on Tuesday.
ELURU: Two rain-related deaths have been reported in West Godavari district so far. While Varala Savitri of Iragavaram mandal was killed in wall collapse, Bollarapu Asirvadam, 12, of Akiveedu mandal was washed away in a flooding irrigation canal. Floodwater entered government offices at Eluru and Narsapur. According to information reaching here, 129 houses were fully damaged in the rain. Over 750 families were shifted to relief camps in Narsapur town. Weavers in 25th and 26th wards in the town were the worst hit. They lost work as rainwater entered the pits, bringing the looms to a grinding halt. It is likely to take a week for floodwaters to recede.
Relief camps
Collector Lav Agarwal said relief camps were set up in Bhimavaram, Akiveedu and Narsapur mandals. The functioning of the Revenue Divisional Office at Narsapur was paralysed till noon with a huge pool of water around it. Employees ventured to wade through the floodwaters only after noon. Similar was the case with the municipal office and the Mandal Development Office in the town and DEO office in Eluru. Roads were under a sheet of water in Powerpet, Government hospital and Srinivasa Mahal areas in the city due to overflowing drains.
