KOZHIKODE: M. Kamalam, Chairperson, Kerala State Women's Commission, has lauded giving effect to the domestic violence Act from October 26. The panel wants the State Government to provide an impetus for the implementation of the law and handle cases with due care. Briefing presspersons here on Tuesday, Ms. Kamalam described the legislation as a landmark in handling cases of harassment and violence against women within the confines of their marital home. She said the law was expected to provide speedy justice to women, as protection officers were expected to submit the case details to the magistrate in two days and the report within two months. She wanted the Government to appoint protection officers in all districts as early as possible.
Awareness classes
The commission had conducted awareness classes on the legislation in 11 districts. Ms. Kamalam said that from the experience of the panel, the number of cases of harassment against women had come down perceptibly in the State. At a sitting here on Tuesday, 23 cases came up for hearing. Eight cases were settled and five referred to the Superintendent of Police. One was referred to the District Legal Services Authority. In a case involving a divorced couple, the woman, from Kozhikode, got back her jewellery weighing 26 sovereigns, besides household items from her former spouse, who belonged to Alappuzha. In another case, the alimony paid to a separated spouse was increased from Rs. 1,750 to Rs. 2,000. V. Shantaram, Director of the commission, was present. s
