Jalandhar boys clinch title

Principal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Government High School, Harnamdaspura, Jalandhar, won the 24th ONGC Nehru sub-junior hockey tournament beating Town High School, Sundergarh, Orissa, 3-2 in the final at the Shivaji Stadium here on Tuesday.

Prabhdeep Singh struck twice in the second half and then helped defend a late charge by the Sundergarh boys to lift the trophy and a winner's cheque of Rs. 96,000. Town High School fought back brilliantly towards the end, raising hopes of an extra-time play, but could not and finished runner-up to bag a prize cheque of Rs. 64,000.

Jalandhar boys grabbed the initiative early on when Barkat Singh sent the ball soaring into the net from a first penalty corner in the fifth minute. The goal was disallowed as the ball was deflected off a player's foot. Seven minutes later, Harjinder Singh opened the account when he scored on the run from the left flank.

Taking lead

Prabhdeep scored the second goal for the Jalandhar team in the 34th minute before converting a penalty stroke in the 36th minute. Blarkey Lakra had committed a foul on Harjinder.

Sundergarh looked resigned till Ignacis Toppo infused spirit into the team. On a pass from Ernes Surin from the left, Toppo cut into the circle and slammed in to make it 3-1. A minute later, Surin made it 3-2 after a solo.

Jalandhar forwards soon withdrew into defence and the team played out the remaining time braving two good attempts from the rival.

Garib Ram posts win

Captain Mohit scored two goals to lead Garib Ram Memorial Senior Secondary Public School, Nangloi, Delhi, to a bronze-finish earlier in the day beating Army Boys Sports Company, Danapur 3-2.

In the match for the third place, Nangloi school grabbed the lead in the first minute through Ashok. The Delhi school held on to it till the 30 minute, but on changing the ends, Benedict Guria (45th minute) struck the equaliser for Army Boys Sports Company, Danapur.

Mohit put his team ahead again, scoring in the 49th minute and then slammed yet another in the 58th minute. In between, Naveen struck for Delhi as it shocked a better-rated Danapur team.
