`Transformers are being diverted'

BIJAPUR: Opposition leader in the zilla panchayat, Panchappa Kalburgi, on Monday said the Hubli Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM) was diverting newly released transformers to different areas. The Government had made available 200 transformers exclusively to the Bijapur division to replace those damaged in the floods, which were being diverted, he said.

The State Government should take note of this and issue directive to officials, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Temple visit

Bidar: Former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah visited the Shambhulingeshwara temple in Rekulagi village in Humnabad taluk on Monday. He was accompanied by former ministers H.M. Revanna and H. Vishwanath. They performed a special puja. The leaders spent around two hours at the temple and interacted with the temple trust chairman Sangappa Patil.

Bidar: Jamaat-E- Islami Hind organised Id Milan, a meeting of people of various faiths in Bidar on Sunday. Moulana Mohammad Fahimuddin spoke on the significance of Ramzan. Among others who spoke were Gurudwara Guru Nanak Jhira preacher Gyani Darbara Singh and Member of Parliament Narsingrao Suryavanshi, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Two teachers of the Government Polytechnic College returned a cheque for Rs. 1 lakh to its owners in Bidar on Monday. Sharanappa Patil and Jagannath Gowdappa found a self-addressed cheque for Rs. 1 lakh on the road near their college in the afternoon. It belonged to the N K Jabshetty Ayurvedic College. The teachers returned it to the college. Ayurvedic college authorities, polytechnic college principal Vaijagonda, and employee association office-bearers Basavaraj Bharashetty and Shivashankar Tokre congratulated the teachers. — Staff Correspondent

Dental camp

Bidar: S.B. Patil Dental College conducted a dental health camp in Baroor village in Bidar taluk on Monday. A team of doctors led by Vijay Konda treated over 150 patients. Medicines were distributed free of cost. Baroor Gram Panchayat members extended co-operation, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

Infrastructure development

PANAJI: Goa Government will invest around Rs. 12 crore this year to improve streetlighting and broadening of roads in the Varca-Navelim coastal belt of south Goa under the central scheme of Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports. The Government has chosen this belt for infrastructure upgradation as it is lined up with a number of five star as well as other category resorts and hotels. A.V. Palekar, Managing Director of Goa Industrial Development Corporation, the State industrial development agency implementing the ASIDE, told The Hindu on Tuesday that around Rs. 8 crore would be spent on broadening the narrow village road network and Rs. 4 crore on streetlights. — Special Correspondent

Drama

Karwar: Mattighatta Ranga Balaga, an amateur drama troupe from Sirsi, staged "Avartana," on Om beach near Gokarn. Directed by K.R. Prakash, a journalist, the drama reflected the life of people living in the coastal belt.

Preparations on for Suvarna Karnataka

CHAMARAJANAGAR: The district administration is gearing up to celebrate Suvarna Karnataka on Wednesday. District in-charge and Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar will hoist the Kannada flag at the B.R. Ambedkar stadium at 9 a.m. Chamarajanagar MLA Vatal Nagaraj will preside over the function. Chamarajanagar MP M. Shivanna will distribute the prizes.

VHP activists stage protest

MYSORE: Activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishat and the Bajarang Dal on Tuesday staged a protest in front of Deputy Commissioner's office here against terrorism in Karnataka.

They said though there were a handful of terrorists, they succeeded in training hundreds of youth in the taking up arms. Several madrasas had cropped up illegally which needed to be closed down by the district administration, they claimed. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: A convention of the Jetty community of Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts will be held at Town Hall here on November 2. More than 1,000 people belonging to the Jetty community and residing in the two districts will participate in the convention. In all, 5,000 people belonging to Jetty community lived in Mysore and Chamarajanagar district, president of the Mysore District Jetty Association Subramanya Jetty said. — Staff Correspondent

Militants to undergo narco-analysis

BANGALORE: The State police have decided to subject two suspected Pakistani militants arrested in Mysore to narco-analysis to elicit more information from them, sources in the State Secretariat said. Mohammed Fahad and Mohammed Ali Hussain, arrested on October 27, are said to be reluctant to divulge information during interrogation and this has prompted the police to make them undergo narco-analysis. — Special Correspondent

Health university releases exam results

Bangalore: The results of the first year BDS (OS, RS and RS2 batches) and super-speciality courses, M.Ch Urology and Paediatric Surgery examinations, conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences during August/September 2006, have been released.

Satellite Towns Ring Road proposed

Bangalore: The Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) has proposed a 285-km Satellite Towns Ring Road (STRR). This echoes the proposal made some weeks ago by the State Government to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to provide faster connectivity to areas such as Nelamangala and Kolar where some industries already exist and more could be attracted.

The STRR, if built, will be a link between Bangalore the proposed satellite towns around it. — Special Correspondent

National meet on veterinary surgery

Bidar: The Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University is organising a national conference on veterinary surgery from November 2 to 4.

This is the second time that the conference is being held in the State and the first time in Bidar, university Vice-Chancellor R.N. Srinivas Gowda told presspersons here on Tuesday. — Staff Correspondent

Entrust bakery to workers: union

Bangalore: H.V. Ananthasubba Rao, AITUC leader and V.B. Bakery and Butter Sponge Firm Employees Union president on Tuesday alleged that the firm, which had collected Provident Fund and Employees State Insurance subscription from its employees, had not depositing the money with the organisations concerned.

Mr. Rao told presspersons here that when the workers placed their demands before the management, the latter stopped production leaving the workers in the lurch. The bakery should be entrusted to the workers, he said. — Staff Reporter
