The plan is to protect Sasthamcotta Lake

KOLLAM: The Youth Congress Kunnathur block committee observed the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Tuesday by taking the initiative to develop a park around Sasthamcotta Lake.

The initiative was part of a move to save the environmentally threatened, freshwater lake, said president of the committee Sudheer Jacob.

Mr. Jacob alleged that successive Governments had long been ignoring the call for urgent steps to save the lake.

The lake, which quenches the thirst of several grama panchayats and Kollam city, is shrinking following the alleged lethargic attitude of the authorities in taking steps to protect it. The park project was inaugurated by District Congress Committee president Sooranad Rajashekaran by planting an ornamental palm.

In his address, Mr. Rajashekaran said that his party would petition the Union Government to announce a project for the protection of the biggest freshwater lake in the State. The tremendous tourism potential of the lake should be exploited, he said.

Mr. Jacob said the Youth Congress would grow plants and provide chairs for visitors in the park.

The work would be completed in three days. The park would help to generate more awareness on protecting the lake. Members of a local club would help to maintain it, he added.
