NEW DELHI: Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal has unveiled a new digital system developed by his Ministry in collaboration with Microsoft to make the process of criminal investigation faster, more accurate and standardised. The system, estimated to cost Rs.1.25 lakh each, makes the entire process beginning from the recording of the first information report to submission of reports to the court during investigations tamper proof. The system provides for recording of all details including the nature of the crime, modus operandi details and seizure of properties, storing of photographs and videos of the crime scene, witness statements, forensic and other reports and enables the investigating officers to prepare summary reports at the click of the button. Launching the system, Mr. Sibal said that it has been field tested successfully in two police stations, one in Dehra Dun and the other in Jaipur. It would be useful to prevent tampering of evidence and in overcoming the problem of witnesses changing their stand, he said. Mr. Sibal said he would soon approach the Supreme Court, the Planning Commission, and the Home Ministry to demonstrate its viability. "The system is not too expensive. The costs can be reduced further if there ismass production. There are 23,000 police stations in the country and even if each of them is supplied with one system, it would cost the exchequer only about Rs. 230 crore." Among other things, the system could also come handy in dealing with the growing menace of terrorism. By establishing a server at the Central and State Government levels it would be possible for the police to access details about any suspect.
