BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Governor, Balram Jakhar, said here on Tuesday that the people's representatives should imbibe the democratic traditions and work culture to serve the cause of the people.

The Governor was speaking as chief guest at a special function held at the Vidhan Sabha auditorium here marking the end of the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of the formation of Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Jakhar said that Madhya Pradesh is richly endowed with natural resources and is also a front-ranking State when it comes to agriculture, especially soyabean and wheat production.

He also drew attention to the rich legacy of Kalidasa, Banbhatta, Makhanlal Chaturvedi, Subadhra Kumari Chauhan, Chandrashekhar Azad, Rani Durgawati, the vibrant tribal culture, historic monuments like Bhimbethaka and Sanchi and the holy places like Ujjain, Omkareshwar and Chitrakut.

He said the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha had continued to reflect the State's diversity during the past five decades.

Dr. Jakhar said that development in a democracy is possible only when the "Opposition is allowed to have its say and the Government is allowed to have its way".

He said all eyes were on those in authority and the need of the hour was that instead of only giving speeches they should strive to fulfil their vision by putting their foot down when they want something to be achieved or done.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that the Legislature plays its own role when it comes to ensuring development, law and order and protecting the rights of the people.

"The State lags behind vis-à-vis the national average when it comes to per capita consumption of energy or the percentage of population living below the poverty line. Situation on the malnutrition front is also grim," he said.
