Proposal to set up a science park in Kodagu

Staff Correspondent

The Rs. 2-crore project is to be completed in two years

Madikeri: The State Government proposes to set up a Science and Technology Park in Kodagu district at a cost of Rs. 2 crore, and it will be completed in two years, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav has said.

Some of the objectives of setting up the park would be to popularise science and disseminate information in the vernacular language; identify and encourage scientific talent through exhibits and models; disseminate information relating to scientific activities of the State and Union Governments; and develop a scientific temper by doing way with superstitious beliefs, Mr. Yadav told The Hindu here on Tuesday. The Government had sent a communication to the Kodagu district administration to identify suitable land for the park, which would require five to 10 acres.

As of now, there was no Government land available within Madikeri city limits. Efforts were on to identify land in the outskirts, Mr. Yadav said.

The proposed park would also be known as District Science Centre.

The lands should be well connected by road, have good drainage system, and communication facilities. If Government land was not available, buying private lands might be difficult owing to the high price. Class C & D lands (degraded forests) could be used for the purpose, Mr. Yadav said.

Kodagu district in-charge Minister Ramachandra Gowda had recently announced the plan to set up the science park.

The building would house a display hall; laboratory and other infrastructure at an estimated cost of Rs. 46.14 lakh; a mobile theatre, audio visual and video centres (Rs. 30.76 lakh); furniture, science exhibits and library (Rs. 46.14 lakh); a bio, ecology and environmental centre (Rs. 30.76 lakh), and sports facilities, mobile laboratory and computer and Internet facility, involving a cost of Rs. 15.38 lakh each.

There would be six posts at the park — of an executive officer, two technical personnel, one stenographer and four personnel to monitor security, gardening and santitation works, Mr. Yadav said.

The committee for the park project would be chaired by the Deputy Commissioner. The zilla panchayat chief executive officer would be its vice-chariman.
