Madikeri: Members of the Madikeri City Block Congress and Youth Congress have opposed the `move' of Kodagu Shishu Kalyana Samste (Institution of Child Welfare) to collect Rs. 30 from every household in the city for garbage disposal from November 1. Speaking to presspersons on Tuesday, K.M. Ganesh, president of the block Congress alleged that the organisation should be divested of the powers and instead, a Stree Shakti group allowed to manage garbage disposal free of cost.
Stree Shakti groups
Citizens had to pay various forms of taxes and cess to the Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC). In view of this, the CMC should entrust works to Stree Shakti groups or manage everything on its own. The samste was entrusted with the task by the Department of Municipal Administration in Bangalore, he said. Mr. Ganesh alleged that none of the CMC councillors had been taken into confidence while deciding the allocation to the samste. The Nirmala Nagara project, scheduled to come up in the city from November 1, was being handled by various Stree Shakti groups. It was a welcome move. Private organisations such as the samste should not be roped in, he said. Also, no tenders had been invited to allot the work, he said. The samste would earn Rs. 15,900 every month for doing nothing. It had entrusted the actual work of garbage collection to a Stree Shakti group. The contract would be for a period of one year, Mr. Ganesh said.
