Poll violence: Uma Bharti calls off dharna

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: Bharatiya Janshakti Party president Uma Bharti called off her dharna at Bada Malehra in Chhattarpur district in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday evening. She went on dharna at the Malehra Police station around midnight protesting against a violent incident at a polling booth and alleging that there was an attempt by some of those in the Bharatiya Janata Party to eliminate her during polling for the Malehra byelection.

Shortly before polling came to an end on Monday evening, there was heavy stone pelting outside the Sairora polling booth covering the Sairora and Tekri villages falling under the Bhagwa police station in the Malehra Assembly constituency over the issue of bogus voting. Ms. Bharti, who was the polling agent for her party candidate, was present at the time of this incident. Ms.Bharti's convoy was attacked and her vehicle damaged. The supporters also retaliated. Protesting against this incident, Ms. Bharti sat on a dharna at Sairora on Monday evening.
