Two houses collapse in landslip

Retaining walls of two more houses cave in following wet spell


  • Officials asked to shift hill area people to safe places
  • Priority for supplying food, water to evacuees

    VIJAYAWADA: Two houses collapsed at Brahmananda Reddy Nagar in the city due to a landslip caused by incessant rain on Tuesday. Retaining walls of another two houses also collapsed in the same area.

    Downpour continued on the fourth day in the city and rainwater entered into houses in New Rajarajeswaripet, Singh Nagar and surrounding areas.

    Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar visited Brahmananda Reddy Nagar, Mallikarjunapet, Kothapet hill area, New Rajarajeswaripet and Singh Nagar and asked officials concerned to shift the residents of hill area to safe places. Meanwhile, Krishna district Collector Navin Mittal announced an ex gratia of Rs. 3,000 each to the families whose houses have been completely damaged and Rs. 1,200 each to the families whose houses have been damaged partially. Importance would be given to supply of nutritious food and drinking water to the evacuees, he said.

    Mr. Mittal, along with district Superintendent of Police Murugesh Kumar Singh visited relief camps in Machilipatnam. Water entered into 300 houses in Pedaparupudi village, where over 3,000 acres of farm fields were submerged. Over 1,500 houses were partially damaged in Unguturu mandal. Water was flowing at two-foot height on Jeelagalagandi Bridge and at Pacharlanka on Machilipatnam-Challapalli road.

    Machilipatnam division registered a rainfall of 747.92 cm in the last four days while it was 440.14 cm in Gudivada division, 170.14 cm in Vijayawada division and 166.19 cm in Nuzvid division.
