State-level blood donation drive begins

Thiruvananthapuram: The State-level blood donation drive under the aegis of Kerala and Lakshawdeep NCC Directorate commenced on Tuesday at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Medical Centre Blood Bank. Deputy Director General, NCC, Kerala and Lakshawdeep O.A. James formally inaugurated the drive. Union Minister for Defence A.K. Antony spoke to Under Officer Shini. S of M.G. College and appreciated her gesture.

Telephone snag

Thiruvananthapuram: Over 2,000 telephones in Chala, Power House Road and Arayasala developed fault in the rain that lashed the city. A release from BSNL said the snag would be rectified within 48 hours.

Elections

Thiruvananthapuram: The elections to the Kerala State Child Welfare Council for 2006-2009 will be held at the council auditorium, Thycaud, on November 28. According to Director of Social Welfare Sumana N. Menon, the last date for submitting the nomination papers is 1 p.m. on November 13. Ms. Menon, who is also the returning officer for the poll, said the scrutiny would take place on November 14.

Man gets life term

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fast Track Court III Judge M.R. Anitha on Tuesday sentenced Sudarsanan, alias Podiyan, a resident of Chirayankeezh, to life and fine of Rs.5,000 after he was found guilty of murdering Kumar, also a resident of Chirayankeezh, in November 2000.

Woman dead

Thiruvananthapuram: A 65-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by an autorickshaw in Aryanadu on Tuesday afternoon. The police identified the deceased as Fatheema Beevi. — Staff Reporter
