Armed policemen to replace rifle sentries

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Policemen armed with handguns will replace rifle sentries in front of select 56 police stations in the State on Wednesday.

The experimental measure was to make police stations more people friendly. The police sentries have been trained in the use of pistols and revolvers. The colonial system of posting rifle sentries had been criticised of being "too intimidatory." The selected police stations in Thiruvananthapuram district are Traffic station, Nemom, Vizhinjam, Fort, Medical College, Neyyatinkara, Nedumangadu, Attingal and Vithura.
