Work towards equality: Sonia

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: It was a chance for students to get a few lessons on responsibilities and right values from Congress president Sonia Gandhi here on Tuesday.

Addressing "Drishtikon", a training camp for district presidents of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), Ms. Gandhi said the biggest challenge facing the country was to give equal opportunities to people from different religions, castes and regions.

"If one section has everything and another section remains deprived, then the country cannot truly progress."

The most important issue was to ensure that the student community follows the constructive path.

"If students lose their way, there would be anarchy everywhere. Recent incidents have stressed that there is a need for discipline,'' she said.

"NSUI is fighting in many universities. This increases your responsibility. You must also remember to fulfil your duties with honesty. Student communities can integrate with different sections. They can also spread awareness about female foeticide and dispelling superstition," she said.

The function was attended by Union Minister of State for Labour Oscar Fernandes, senior Congress leaders Ashok Gehlot and Mukul Vasnik, DPCC president Ram Babu Sharma and NSUI president Nadeem Javed.
