dated November 3, 1956: New States are born

The reorganised States of the Indian Republic came into being on November 1. There are 14 States and six Centrally-administered territories in the country now. The States are Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Bombay, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Mysore, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir. The Centrally-administered areas are Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, the Laccadive and Amindivi Islands and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Inaugurating the new Mysore State at Bangalore, the President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said, "Let it be said that the new States which have been created and which have come into existence to-day will knit India together with unbreakable ties and knit the country, socially, politically, economically and in every other way." He then pressed a button and a big map of the new State of Mysore was brilliantly lit.
