PERIL LOOMS: The stench from uncleared waste has become unbearable, say the public. Photo: P. Goutham
SALEM: Poor sanitary condition on Manickavasagam Street in Ammapet is posing a serious health hazard to residents in the area.
Weeks together
With the Salem Corporation failing to streamline the daily waste collection, heaps of waste remains on the street uncleared for weeks together. Residents have complained that the sanitary workers in ward 40 are not turning up regularly. The recent rain in the city has aggravated the problem, as the waste spread to the street, making the lives of residents miserable. "The stench from the garbage has become unbearable these days," residents said. The residents have made repeated representations to the Corporation officials.
No steps yet
But the civic administration is yet to take any action to address the problem. "We are tired of complaining to civic officials. The piling of garbage on the street poses serious threat to the health," they pointed out. The drains in the area also remain heavily silted. During the rain, the channels overflowed causing immense inconvenience, residents said. They demanded that the Corporation remove the garbage and clean the drains on a regular basis.
Pig menace
They also wanted the civic administration to take steps to control the pig menace in the area. When asked, the Corporation officials said the sanitary workers would remove the garbage at once.
