Electrical items to indicate levels of energy efficiency

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: All electrical items will now be required to have grading to indicate the levels of energy efficiency. The scheme had been announced earlier but not enforced strictly.

While the energy efficiency accreditation for tubelights will begin within 10 days, for refrigerators and air-conditioners, the marking will be mandatory from the end of this month. The grading will be done from figures 1 to 5 with 1 indicating the least efficiency level and 5 the highest. The highest level of energy efficiency should be at least 27 per cent more efficient than the lowest.

Though marking of the energy efficiency grades have been made mandatory, the levels of energy in the goods is voluntary, according to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
