Commits suicide

Tuticorin : An 18-year-old girl committed suicide here on Tuesday.

The police said the girl, who is an undergraduate student at a private college on Tuticorin-Tiruchendur road, fell in love with a boy from V.O. Chidambaram College.

The affair was opposed by the parents of the girl. Hence, she committed self-immolation.

Man duped

Tuticorin : The police are on the lookout for six persons who had allegedly duped M. Subramaniyam in the sale of 19-cent land at Pudukottai recently.

The complainant bought the land from Dhanalakshmi. Even after he settled the amount, the accused along with her four relatives refused to hand over the documents pertaining to the transfer.

Plantain trees damaged

Tuticorin : The police are searching for M. Deivanayagam (58), who had allegedly damaged plantain trees in a farm at Eral recently.

The police said the accused caused damage to 1,200 plantains belonging to P. Madasamy (73) and threatened him.

Iron sheets stolen

Tuticorin : The police on Wednesday arrested S. Charmaraj (23) on a charge of stealing iron sheets from a shop here on Tuesday.

The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by A. Chandrasekhar that four pieces were missing. The sheets were recovered from the accused.

103.4 mm rainfall

Tuticorin : The intensity of rain was subsided in the district over the last few days.

According to Disaster Management and Mitigation Department sources, the district received a total of 103.4 mm rainfall, with an average of 5.44 mm, during the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

Following is the amount of rainfall recorded (in mm) at various stations: Kadalkudi 3; Kovilpatti 2; Kayathar 20; Kadambur 41; Kazhugamalai 13.4; Maniyachi and Sattankulam 2.

Rally taken out

Nagercoil: Rural Women's Development Society and Rural Uplift Centre in Nagercoil recently organised a rally from Kanyakumari Bhagavathiamman Temple to Vivekananda Kendra. It was to urge the Government to concede a seven-point charter of demands. The Supreme Court Judge, Arjit Pasayat, flagged off the rally. Officials from the Revenue Department and the district court participated. — Staff Reporter

Saplings to be planted

PERAMBALUR: Saplings will be planted on the vacant site in front of the Collectorate here. In a press release here on Wednesday, the Collector, Anil Meshram, said that the Agriculture and the Forest departments would plant the saplings.

The front part of the Collectorate had become eyesore following the growth of thorny plants.

The Highways Department has pressed earthmovers into service for clearing the bushes, he said.

Special programme

PERAMBALUR: A special programme to explain the responsibilities of the elected representatives of local bodies will be held at the Collectorate here on Friday.

According to official sources, the village panchayat presidents, chiefs of the panchayat unions, town panchayats, municipalities and the president and members of the district panchayat would participate in it.

The objective of the programme is to explain the role and responsibilities of the elected representatives, particularly new faces.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 98.51 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 14,377 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Auto driver killed

ERODE: An autorickshaw driver died in a road accident. Sivashanmugam (40) of Sastrinagar, Erode, accidentally hit his auto behind a bullock cart on Tuesday night in Surampatty. He sustained serious injuries and died at Erode Government Headquarters Hospital. - Staff Reporter

Rain hampers textile sales

ERODE: The weekly textile shandy, which is conducted on every Tuesday and Wednesday at Erode, could not assemble due to heavy rain. The merchants who came from various places could not do the business. It may be recalled that during the last week also the shandy could not assemble. - Staff Reporter

Medical books released

SALEM: Four books on medical subjects in Tamil written by S. Rajah, child specialist and neonatologist were released at a function here recently. Writer Lena Tamilvanan released the books. Kavithalaya Chandrasekar of Ashokkumar Thinkers Forum presided over the function. Mr. Rajah has written 46 books in Tamil and English on medical subjects so far. - Staff Reporter

Suspended

SALEM: Cooperative Department has placed a salesman of a fair price shop under suspension following irregularities in the shop. A team of officials conducted raids on 53 fair price shops in Salem, Edaipadi, Panamarathupatti, Sankagiri and Mahudanchavadi areas. During the raids, the officials collected a fine of Rs. 7,527. - Staff Reporter

HC compulsorily retires FTC judge

CHENNAI: A Fast Track Court (FTC) Judge has been compulsorily retired from service "in public interest" by the Madras High Court.

A notification issued by Registrar-General S. Palanivelu said the Additional District Judge of FTC-III at Dharapuram, G. Rahamathullah, was relieved from the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Service with effect from October 12, when a Government Order had been issued to that effect.

A cheque for a sum of Rs.1.1 lakh, being three months pay and allowances in lieu of the three-month notice period, was also sent to Mr. Rahamathullah. — Special Correspondent

PM, Sonia greet Prince of Arcot

CHENNAI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi have greeted the Prince of Arcot, Mohammed Abdul Ali, and other members of his family on the birth of his first grandson, Mohammed Ibrahim Ali. Nawabzada Mohammed Ibrahim Ali will be the 10th successor to the Arcot Princeship.

Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa have also conveyed their greetings to the Prince of Arcot , according to a press release. — Special Correspondent

New weekly service to Nagercoil

CHENNAI: A new weekly super fast express to Nagercoil from Chennai Egmore will be formally inaugurated on Thursday.

Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran will flag off the new service at Chennai Egmore. The service will leave Chennai Egmore at 4.45 p.m. and reach Nagercoil at 5.30 a.m. the next day.

Regular service will commence on November 3 from Nagercoil and on November 9 from Egmore. Advance reservation is available for the above trains, according to a Southern Railway press release. — Special Correspondent

SHRC issues notice to authorities

CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Nilgiris district authorities seeking a report on an incident in which a seven year-old-boy was bitten by stray dogs near Coonoor a few days ago.

A Bench of the Commission, headed by its Chairperson, Justice A.S. Venkatachalamoorthy, took suo motu cognisance of a report in a Tamil daily regarding the incident.

The report said Nagaraj, son of Rajan of Kattapettu near Coonoor and studying in standard II, was playing with his friends with a ball.

When he went to collect the ball, which had rolled away, some stray dogs bit him. The Bench has issued notice to the Nilgiris District Collector and the Commissioner of Coonoor Municipality ordering them to send their reports within three weeks. — Special Correspondent
