History of Tamil theatre on BBC
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
BBC's Tamil Service will launch a 10-part series on the history of Tamil theatre from November 5.
The series is an acknowledgement of how stage plays have held sway in spite of the upstart, cinema.
The series will sketch the evolution of Tamil theatre from the early days of street drama to contemporary stage plays, and how playwrights adapted to technological changes. Tirumalai Manivannan, head of BBC Tamil, said, "The series will analyse how drama in its 20th century form was used by Tamil leaders as a vehicle to carry their political messages.Drama has always been a part of the Tamil cultural milieu. The centuries-old `Koothu', mentioned in classics such as the Silappadhikaram tapped into mythological themes mostly based on the Mahabaratha."
Pioneers such as Sankaradas Swamigal, T.K.S. brothers, R.S. Manohar, `Sivaji' Ganesan and M.R. Radha will find mention in the series. Interviews with Purisai Sambanda Thambiraan, Cho Ramasamy and Manorama have also been included. Contemporary artists S.Ve. Shekher, `Crazy' Mohan, Pralayan, Mu. Ramasamy and Gnani will also be featured.
