Congress blames Mulayam Government

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday criticised the violence in Uttar Pradesh local bodies elections and said this was the result of the "lawless atmosphere" created by the State Government.

"It shows the governance or lack of it in Uttar Pradesh. It [violence] can give you an idea [of] what is in store in a larger arena of Assembly elections," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.

To a volley of questions as to why the Congress was officially not withdrawing support to the Government if it was concerned about lawlessness, Mr. Singhvi said the Congress numbers did not matter in arithmetic of the Assembly. The party was extending only issue-based support.
