CHENNAI: Anna University has tied up with the Chennai chapter of the Indian Society for Non-destructive Testing to offer study programmes in non-destructive testing (NDT) as part of its B.E. and M.Tech courses.

"This would enable scientists to work on research projects with a direct impact on the industrial needs of the country. Research projects, teaching and training programmes, conferences and workshops will form part of the programme," Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan said after signing a memorandum of agreement with representatives of ISNT on Wednesday. NDT is a technique that is increasingly finding a wide application in automobile and aviation industries as it enables testing of materials, such as welded metal parts, without destroying them.

As per the MoU, while the varsity will offer the required technological and infrastructural support, ISNT will provide expertise and consultancy.

The MoU also allows for exchange of faculty members, students, trainers and study materials.

Twinning programmes

The varsity also signed pacts with 30 foreign universities for offering twinning programmes, which would enable students to gain better knowledge of NDT techniques, Mr. Viswanathan said.

ISNT would take up contract research projects, along with the university, for public and private industries and provide consultancy services, S.I. Sanklecha, president, ISNT, said. Collaborations would also be effected with national and international agencies for technology development, transfer and adoption for use by industries and institutions, he added.
