A show of `stree shakti'

Staff Correspondent

Nearly 4,000 from around 300 `Stree Shakti' SHGs take part in procession

HUBLI: It was definitely a show of "stree shakti" (women power) during the "Rajyotsava Day" procession organised by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation here on Wednesday.

Nearly 4,000 women of around 300 Stree Shakti self-help groups took part in the procession.

When the procession started from Siddaroodh Math premises, it looked as though it was meant only for women. As the procession moved on, boys and men representing various organisations joined.

From teenaged girls to those above fifty, most of these women had come in their "uniform" saris, which helped in differentiating between the various self-help groups. Many had brought along their children who were dressed as historical personalities.

It took four hours for the procession to reach Nehru Ground, the concluding point.

Mr. Shettar flagged off the procession at Siddharoodh Math. The former Ministers Jabbarkhan Honnalli and A.M. Hindasageri and Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Commissioner P. Manivannan took part in the inaugural function.

Many organisations and individuals in the twin cities celebrated the festival in their own way.

Kannada flags were fluttering on public transport vehicles and two-wheelers.

A few had stickers of the Kannada flag on their vehicles.

Many organisations distributed sweets and fruits at hospitals and several of them organised cultural programmes in the evening.

Members of Dharwad District Student Congress led by its president Bangaresh Hiremath donated blood.

Hindustani vocalist Gangubai Hangal too joined in the celebrations by participating in a programme organised by Kannada Sainya.

Children of city schools who are part of the Children's Movement for Civic Awareness chose the occasion to create awareness on civic sense through tableaux.
