DHARWAD: Work on the first phase of the cultural complex being built here as part of "Suvarna Karnataka" celebrations is nearing completion, Revenue and District-in-charge Minister Jagadish Shettar has said.

He was speaking at the Rajyotsava celebrations held at R.N. Shetty stadium here on Wednesday, after hoisting the Kannada flag and receiving guard-of- honour from police contingents and students.

Mr. Shettar said that the complex was being built at a cost of Rs. 1.27 crore. The State Government had released Rs. 85 lakh for it, he said.

Many new schemes were being implemented in the district to mark the golden jubilee year of formation of the State.

A grant of Rs. 55 lakh had been released for the district under various schemes and already Rs. 29.29 lakh had been spent by the district administration for development of villages in this financial year, he said.

Karnataka's rich tradition and cultural heritage had been recognised at the national level.

The younger generation should be aware of the richness of their land and imbibe the values it stood for, he said.

"Suvarna Karnataka celebrations are not limited to the Government alone. Every Kannadiga should contribute towards celebrating the festival," he said.

The Revenue Minister reiterated the State Government's commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Dr. Nanjundappa Committee for development of the backward taluks in the State.

He gave away awards to veterinary doctor Rakesh; M.L. Trivikramrao, tahsildar of Kalghatgi, and R.B. Pattar, shirastedar, for their outstanding service.

Earlier, he inspected the parade by contingents of the police, Home Guards, National Cadet Corps, Bharat Seva Dal, Police Children's Residential School, police band and students of various schools led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (District Armed Reserve) K.D. Malligawad.
