Ban on Shoaib Akhtar, Asif

Karachi: In a major jolt to Pakistan's World Cup hopes, fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years and fellow pacer Mohammad Asif for one year on Wednesday for testing positive for banned drugs. The two-year ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board could effectively mean the end of the 31-year-old Shoaib's international career.

A three-member PCB drug inquiry tribunal said it had heard both players and medical experts and reached the conclusion .

"They have been informed of the decision and have the right to appeal for a review of the bans," the tribunal said in Lahore. — PTI
