Bangalore: Jnanpith Award-winning Kannada writer U.R. Ananthamurthy will be speaking on the topic "New-S-ensation" at a media seminar organised by The Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication on Friday. Nupur Basu of NDTV, A. Released on bail

TUMKUR: B. Suresh Gowda, general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party State unit, was released on bail here on Wednesday.

Mr. Gowda was arrested on October 21, along with many farmers, when they protested against the Kothagere tank bund being demolished. The police filed criminal cases against 400 farmers. — Staff Correspondent

Order welcomed

Bangalore: All-India Defence Employees Federation, representing 4.5 lakh civilians employees in the armed forces, has welcomed the move to grant leave privileges to defence industrial workers on par with non-industrial workers.

The federation had been asking for this from 1953 itself and, following the recent order, an industrial worker will be entitled to three days' privilege leave in a year. Leave up to 300 days can be accumulated while in service and surrendered and encashed at the time of retirement as one of the retirement benefits. — Special Correspondent

Body found

TUMKUR: The body of a farmer of Horakeri village in Gubbi taluk was found in an eucalyptus grove in the adjacent Turuvekere taluk on Tuesday. — Staff Correspondent

Last date extended

DHARWAD: The Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART), New Delhi, has extended the last date for submission of proposals from non-governmental organisations for 2006-07 till November 30. Dismissed

HUBLI: The Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has dismissed from service Gadigeppa Adiveppa Dharwad, an employee of the Meter Department, on charges of unauthorised absence from service and dereliction of duty, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Two arrested

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have arrested two persons on charges of selling pirated CDs of films of various languages. The names of the arrested have been given as Mahabubsab Lalsab Nadaf and Anand Basappa Hunagund of Hubli. A case has been registered at Hubli Town Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

Ten killed in Bidar road accident

Bidar: Ten persons were killed and four injured when a jeep collided with a lorry on the Bidar-Srirangapatna State highway near Karanja dam in Bhalki taluk on Wednesday.

Eight of the dead were identified as Channappa Nagshetty (55) and Nagappa Subhash (23) of Hallikhed B., Raju (28) of Kudadur, Balaji Satyanarayana (20) of Janawada, Saraswati Mallikarjun (35) of Janti, her sons Nagaraj (7) and Rajkumar (9) and Prayagbai Kallappa (55) of Janti. — Staff Correspondent

Government thanked

Bangalore: Following the selection of Mahesh Joshi, Director of Doordarshan Kendra, Bangalore, for the Rajyotsava Award, Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati Brijeshwar Singh has thanked the State Government for having recognised the services of the Bangalore Doordarshan Kendra to the State.

Documentary films

Bidar: The Department of Tourism and the district administration will produce documentary films on the various tourist attractions in the district.

Shooting for the first such documentary on the university madrasa of Mohammad Gawan was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister and district in charge Bandeppa Kashempur here on Wednesday.

He said this would not only serve as a medium to attract tourists, but also to document the rich cultural history of the district. Several documentaries would be made on all the historic places in the district, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Film shows

BELLARY: The Department of Information will screen popular and award-winning Kannada films in Hospet city as part of the Hampi Utsav, a three-day mega cultural festival of dance, drama and music. `Sri Krishna Devaraya', `Kadina Benki', `Rama, Bhama, Shama' and `Gandugali Kumararama' will be screened for three days in cinemas Meer-Alam, Bala, Saraswati and Lakshmi from November 2 to 4 at 9 a.m. daily.

B. Sriramulu, Minister for Tourism and Textiles, will inaugurate the screening of films at Meer-Alam talkies on the morning of November 2. H.R. Gaviyappa, Hospet MLA, will preside. — Staff Correspondent

Sentenced

DAVANGERE: Davangere District and Sessions Judge Siddalingesh has sentenced a man to four-and-a-half years' imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 14,000 for attempt to rape an

11-year-old girl sometime back in the city. Police said Amarappa (65) had brought the girl to his house on some pretext and tried to rape her. The father of the girl had registered a complaint at the city all-woman police station. — Staff Correspondent

Pedestrian killed

HASSAN: Lakshmane Gowda (31) of Hangarahalli village in Hassan taluk was killed when a lorry knocked him down near Kallenahalli on Wednesday morning. The Gorur Rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Blood donation camp

MYSORE: Cadets of 2/14 Karnataka Battalion of NCC of J.S.S College donated blood on Tuesday on the occasion of all-India level NCC blood donation campaign. A release issued here on Wednesday said Commanding Officer of 14 Karnataka Battalion Lt. Col. Dilip Nambiar inaugurated the camp. He said the programme was being held for a week all over the country.
