College Day was celebrated at Sri Bharathi College of Education and Sri Subabharathi Teacher Training Institute for Women at Kaikurichi near Pudukottai recently. The Principal (in-charge), Government College of Education, Pudukottai, C. Iyyathurai, spoke on the importance of reading newspapers. Students should be motivated to develop the habit to keep themselves abreast of the national and international events, he said. The Controller of Examinations, The Rajah's College, S. Palaniappan, the Reader in Physical Science, S. Umarani, and the Lecturer in Education, M. Anbuchezhian, gave tips on making teaching a more effective and interesting task. The Secretary of the college, V. Vaithiyanathan, said that several competitions were held as part of the celebrations. The institute organised special sessions with focus on communication skills and spoken English as part of personality development programme. The Special Grade Lecturer, District Institute of Education and Training, Pudukottai, N. Chelladurai, gave away the prizes. Early warning systems on tsunami were the need of the hour and the public should be well equipped to face any situation, Anand G. Bhole, president of Institute of Sustainable Development and Research (ISDR) at A.V.C. College of Engineering in Mayiladuturai has said. Addressing a seminar on `Integrated planning and management for natural disaster' organised by the ISTE chapter of the college with International Commission of Ground water and Sea water Integration (CGSI and ISDR, Dr. Bhole spoke about the United Nations General Assembly's decision to reduce the impact of natural disasters. Annette Kimmich, Executive Secretary of CGSI and Manager, Geology Society from Switzerland suggested conducting district-level natural disaster management training programmes. Lalit Choudhary, vice-president of ISDR, presented a paper on `Tsunami - 15 months later.' S.P Yavalkar, Deputy Secretary, Directorate of Technical Education, Mumbai, presented a paper on `Disaster management and social responsibility.' Arun V. Parwate, Principal of AVC College, explained the services rendered by the college for the rehabilitation of victims. S. Karthikeyan, Chairman of AVC institutions also spoke. S. Ramanathan, Director of Management Studies of AVC College, proposed vote of thanks.
