AN EDITION OF THE CAKE: Decorated cakes were on display at a contest organised by BAKE in Kochi on Tuesday. A replica of The Hindu as the icing was also on display. Photo: Vipinchandran
KOCHI: Icing on the cake, literally. It was, perhaps, difficult to judge which was the best. Some even looked like some posters. While some were picturesque, some had a theme. Some good artistic talents from different bakeries were on display at an event organised by the Bakers Association Kerala (BAKE). `Decorate a Cake' contest held here on Tuesday was quite an eyeful. There was a touch of modern art in some, while some others touched on religious themes. Pictures of people and landscapes were also seen as the cake topping. There were also two pictures of the Mahatma drawn up for the contest. One participant had drawn Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, while another one had come up with the Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza. A contestant came up with the front page of The Hindu too full with the masthead, the logo, pictures of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the headlines and also an advertisement. Then there were some contemporary themes like chikungunya and exploitation of women, old age, elephants decorated for temple festival and Theyyam drawn up as the cake's icing. While one artist touched upon God Vishnu's full-fledged image, another artist had the `Last Supper' on the cake. There was a Jesus and also Little Krishna. Another one was Yasodha and Krishna. Virgin Mary with infant Jesus made yet another decoration. There were also a couple of Ganesha and Mahalakshmi. There were also Sakunthala, a village woman, a Kerala landscape and some intricate decorative items on display. The contest was held in two categories the butter cream and the wedding cake. The picture of the Last Supper by Cochin Bakery, Thopumpady, bagged the first prize in the butter cream category. Kottaram from Kanjirapally got the second prize and the third prize went to K.R. Bakes for the chikungunya theme.
