Bangalore: All universities in the State will have a uniform calendar of academic events from 2007-08 onwards. A uniform calendar of events will help students who apply for admission to more than one university and anxiously wait for a reply. Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy has expressed himself in favour of a uniform academic year and asked the universities to work together in planning a common calendar. Technical/engineering and medical/dental institutions will be exempt from this proposal. The dates for finalising admissions, receiving applications for examinations, examinations and announcement of results will have to be common and will be worked out by a committee representing the universities. While the Government would like this made applicable to all undergraduate courses, Bangalore University has suggested that a start be made with the first year degree courses from the next academic year and extended in a phased manner. The Government's thinking is that a common calendar of events should be designed coinciding with the date on which II PUC results are declared; that is when the scramble for admissions to degree courses starts in earnest. The universities that are expected to work out a common calendar are the ones at Tumkur, Mangalore, Mysore, Dharwad, Bijapur and Gulbarga. Bangalore University will have a common calendar along with them.
