Karnataka Youth Federation felicitates `Ekikarana' activist from the region

REGISTERING PROTEST: Karnataka Youth Federation and other organisations felicitating D.J. Mulla and the family members of those who actively took part in the unification movement, in Hubli on Wednesday.

HUBLI: Irked by the State Government's failure in including activists from north Karnataka who had fought for the unification of Karnataka, the Karnataka Youth Federation and other organisations held a programme here on Wednesday to felicitate the surviving "Ekikarana" activist and the family members of those who had actively participated in the unification movement.

After celebrating Kannada Rajyotsava here on Wednesday, members of the Federation led by the former minister A.M. Hindasageri conducted a felicitation programme in front of the statue of Kittur Chennamma.

Mr. Hindasageri and others, including Mahendra Singhi, Babajan Mudhol and Rajashekhar Mensinakai, on Tuesday condemned what they termed as neglect of north Karnataka while selecting persons for the "Ekikarana Award."

They said the "Hubli Riot" in 1953, which gave momentum to the unification movement has been mentioned in various books and documents. However, the State Government has overlooked the incident and those who actively took part in the agitation and even served a term in prison, he alleged.

D.G. Mulla, who actively took part in the agitation and was jailed for the same, had been left out while giving "Ekikarana Award", they alleged.

On Wednesday, the federation members felicitated 83-year-old Mulla in the presence of Sri Chandrashekhar Swamiji of Hosa Math. They also remembered Shankargoudra Patil of Adargunchi village near Hubli, who undertook fast-unto-death urging for unification, by felicitating his son Shekhargouda Patil.

Similarly Rashida Begum, wife of A.J. Mudhol; Khutejabi Laxmeshwar, wife of M.P. Laxmeshwar; Anasuyamma, daughter-in-law of Siddappa Kammar; Basavaraj Kubusad, son of Kubusad Shivappa; and Vijayalaxmi, daughter of Hallikeri Virabhadrappa, were felicitated on the occasion.
