Safin rallies to win

FIE UPON YOU! Marat Safin did have his tempestuous moments but managed to gather his wits about him to beat Robin Soderling.

PARIS: Defending champion Tomas Berdych dropped a set before rallying to a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2 second round win over Olivier Rochus on Wednesday at the Paris Masters.

The eight-seeded Berdych, who beat Ivan Ljubicic in last year's final, needed more than two hours to get the better of the Belgian. Berdych of the Czech Republic faces Robby Ginepri of the United States in the third round.

Three-time champion Marat Safin rallied from a set down to beat Robin Soderling 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round on Tuesday.

After taking the first set, Soderling had a chance to move up 4-2 in the second. However, Safin fought back to break the Swede in consecutive games and took the set 6-3.
