KOLLAM: A colourful procession was taken out and a function held in the district to mark the commencement of the 50-day golden jubilee celebrations of the formation of the State. The procession which began from Saint Joseph's Convent School grounds at 11 a.m. was led by Mayor N. Padmalochanan, Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan, Kollam MP P. Rajendran, district panchayat president K. Devaki, Collector B. Srinivas and Deputy Mayor Veliyam Rajan, among others. Women and children dressed in traditional attire, folk arts and groups from the National Cadet Corps accompanied the procession. Caparisoned elephants too were part of the procession. The procession passed through the Taluk Cutchery Junction, Chamakadaand culminated at the Press Club Maidan where the inaugural function was held. Inaugurating the celebrations, Mr. Gurudasan said that the jubilee was being celebrated at a time when the State was facing several challenges. He called upon the people to work for the progress of the State. Kerala had made commendable progress in the social, health, educational and economic sectors during the past 50 years, he said.
Mr. Padmalochanan presided over the function. Mr. Rajendran delivered the keynote address and Ms. Devaki welcomed the gathering.

Our Staff Reporter writes from Pathanamthitta: The Minister for Transport Mathew T. Thomas said the Left Democratic Front Government had the will power to make the State corruption-free. He said the people should come together to fight injustice, corruption and other unlawful activities. The Minister was inaugurating the 50th anniversary celebrations of the formation of the State at the district headquarters here on Wednesday. He called upon the public servants as well as political party leaders to extend their active support to the Government in making the State corruption-free. Joseph M. Puthuserry, MLA, presided. Ashok Kumar Singh, District Collector; K. Ananthagopan, CPI(M) district secretary; Mundappally Thomas, CPI district secretary; A. Shamsuddin, DCC vice-president; Kunju Koshy Paul, Kerala Congress(J) district president; Victor T. Thomas, Kerala Congress(M) district president, among others, spoke. A colourful procession was also taken out in the town to mark the commencement of the celebrations.
