GURUVAYUR: The platinum jubilee celebrations of the historic Guruvayur Satyagraha, which had heralded a wave of struggles for social reforms in Kerala, was held here on Wednesday.

Elders from various walks of life got together at the Satyagraha memorial in the Sathram compounds at the East Nada of the Guruvayur temple to share memories of those struggles.

The 97-year-old T. Raghavan Nair, probably, the only surviving participant of the Satyagraha, led the floral tribute programme.

The function, which began with rendering of the famous Gandhian prayer song Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram ... by the Sarvodaya workers C.M.P. Nair, Gopalji and K.V. Sukumaran, was inaugurated by Puthoor Unnikrishnan, writer.

Mr. Unnikrishnan, in his inaugural address, said the Satyagraha could lead the people of Kerala to the national movement by joining the streams of social reform struggles and the freedom movement.

Municipal chairman M. Krishnadas; Devaswom Deputy Administrator R. Narayanan; Sahridaya Vedi president Janu Guruvayur; and secretary Sajivan Nambiath spoke.
