NEW DELHI: The power distribution company BSES has detected massive power theft totalling 310 kW allegedly by launderers at Dhobi Ghat. It claims to have caught a big laundry establishment running 70 irons, 20 hydrogen bulbs and over 40 normal bulbs on allegedly stolen power. The distribution company said this major case of theft amounting to Rs 1.88 crores in penalties was detected by its enforcement team during a raid at Dhobi Ghat in Sat Nagar on Shankar Road. The accused laundry man, Ashok Kumar, was allegedly found to be running a huge establishment -- spread over an area of over 1,500 square metres -- on stolen power. While his sanctioned load was only 6 kW, he was found to be using nearly 310 kW of electricity, hooked from a nearby BSES LV main to run his establishment. According to people in the area, hotels, restaurants and other dry cleaners in the area and elsewhere used to outsource their laundry work to Ashok Kumar. In another case, the BSES enforcement team caught an illegal power distributor stealing and distributing over 250 kW of electricity. He has been slapped a penalty of Rs. 60 lakh. The theft was detected during a raid at T-40 Thompson Road, Basti Railway Colony near Ajmeri Gate. The accused, Raja Ram Maurya, was found to be stealing and illegally distributing over 250 kW of electricity to 150 residents in the area. "The accused used to charge Rs. 50 per month from each of the residents in the area," said an official.
