DU convocation on Saturday

NEW DELHI: The Special Convocation of Delhi University for conferment of degrees of Doctor of Science and Doctor of Letters on noted Hindi film actor Amitabh Bachchan, cartoonist R.K. Laxman and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will be held at the Convention Hall here on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental will preside over the ceremony.

Help Red Cross, says L-G

NEW DELHI: The Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, B.L. Joshi, on Thursday released a souvenir of the Delhi Red Cross Society and appealed to the Capital's citizens to extend their full support to the Red Cross in reaching out to the needy.

The Society is engaged in providing medical facilities, maternity and child care, and employment-related vocational training. On its behalf, its Delhi branch honorary secretary Krishan Gulati pinned a miniature flag on Mr. Joshi at Raj Niwas on the occasion of Red Cross Week.

DDA gesture to fish sellers

NEW DELHI: Delhi Development Authority Vice-Chairman Dinesh Rai distributed drawings of platforms to fish sellers in Market No. 1 and No. 2 at Chittaranjan Park in South Delhi on Wednesday.

Mr. Rai said the DDA had allowed the owners of fish platforms to raise the platforms and utilise the space beneath for storage purpose. The drawings were distributed to enable the owners to raise the platforms.

Uzbek team meets Delhi Mayor

NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri on Wednesday requested a delegation from Uzbekistan that called on him at Town Hall here for technological assistance in construction of modern multi-level car parking sites ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Mr. Suri informed the delegation that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was imparting primary education to nearly 9.8 lakh children in Delhi and distributing free textbooks, uniforms, mid-day meals, shoes and socks. About 7,000 metric tons of garbage was also collected and disposed of by MCD daily, he added.

Life term for rape, murder

New Delhi: A man who raped and strangled to death his nine-year-old niece after luring her to Rajasthan was on Wednesday sentenced to life in prison by a city court. Rejecting the leniency plea of Chiranji Lal of Gokalpuri in East Delhi, Additional Sessions Judge Reena Singh Nag of Karkardooma Court termed the offence a `most gruesome act' and awarded him a life term besides slapping a fine of Rs 3,000 on him.
