VIJAYAWADA: The city got its first Mayor from a minority community when Mallika Begum was unanimously elected to the coveted post at a special meeting of the general body of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Wednesday.

She will hold the position for the next two years, after which corporator M.V. Ratna Bindu, will assume office in accordance with a formula worked out by the Pradesh Congress Committee. The election of a new Mayor became necessary after Tadi Sakuntala of the CPI resigned in accordance with pre-poll understanding reached between the Congress and her party.
