Kozhikode: The City Corporation Council has asked private bus operators and lorry owners to withdraw their ongoing strike in view of the difficulties faced by the general public in the State. A resolution on this was adopted at a meeting of the council here on Wednesday. Mayor M. Bhaskaran chaired the council session, held in the afternoon. The resolution was initially moved by the Congress councillor P.K.Mamu Koya asking the State Government to immediately take steps to solve the strike by heavy vehicle operators against the directive to install speed governors. As the resolution came up for discussion, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) sought for amending the resolution. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) councillor P.T. Rajan presented an amended resolution seeking the lorry owners and private bus operators to withdraw the strike. The council adopted a resolution entrusting the Mayor to summon the Executive Engineer and Assistant Engineer of the Kallai Division of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and hold discussions with them on the issue of streetlights not burning in at least 12 divisions of the Corporation. K.Najma, CPI(M) councillor, and A.M. Mariam, Indian National League member, moved the resolution through a calling attention motion. Councillors Kanangot Haridas and P.K.Nazar, both CPI(M), said the council had earlier held a meeting with the KSEB officials. But it did not yield any positive results. The Kallai region was the worst hit, they said. V.M. Mohammed of the CPI(M) moved a resolution seeking the intervention of the State to look into the issue of private tour operators getting the benefits of the decision of the Centre to increase the Haj quota. Ms. Mariam, Mr. Mamu Koya, P. Mamu Koya Haji and A.T.Moideen Koya, councillors of the Indian Union Muslim League, spoke on the issue. Moving a resolution, M.C.Anil Kumar, CPI (M) councillor, demanded that the Centre withdraw from its decision to privatise the postal services. As many as 113 agendas were also passed at the council meeting.
